University-educated Christian youth actively participating in church-led community development.
To provide comprehensive support through scholarships and Christ-centered guidance for youth to complete degrees and invest their expertise into DRCongo communities.
Dr. Mike Upio was born in the Nyankunde hospital in which he works. He was sponsored by generous donors from the United States and Europe to complete a medical degree as well as a masters degrees in International Health and Public Health.
He was one of the first to return to rebuild the hospital after the terrible tribal attack in 2002 that left over one thousand dead and turned Nyankunde into a ghost town. During that time he also rebuilt the youth ministry knowing first hand the importance of spiritually investing in the next generation.
Richard and Ruth Dix, a general contractor and OB/GYN doctor respectively, returned to Nyankunde in 2009 for a three year project with Samaritan's Purse to add an ICU and surgical building to the rebuilt hospital.
Richard and Ruth had spent twenty years serving in Nyankunde from 1965-1985 and had watched Dr. Mike Upio grow up in the church. They had also been one of the many sponsors to help with his university training.
Sarah Cabrera (pictured with her now husband Jeremy) met Richard and Ruth Dix through Grace Evangelical Free Church. After hearing their heart for Nyankunde, DRCongo she traveled there in 2010 with a small team to partner with the local church to run a sports, Bible camp for the youth.
Sarah and her team worked with Dr. Mike Upio and the other Congolese leaders to continue to invest in the youth as they continue to rebuild physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Sarah returned again in 2012 with another short term team, this time with an emphasis on teaching youth how to read and teach the Bible. Through the ongoing youth work and summer programs many Congolese leaders emerged among the youth.
In 2013, after Richard, Ruth and Sarah had returned to the US they received an email from Dr. Mike Upio asking for help in finding sponsors for twenty two youth that he believed would be future leaders in the church and workplace.
Dr. Mike had seen the enormous benefit of education in his own life and wanted these leaders among the youth to have the same opportunity. It was out of Dr. Mike’s experience and vision and that email that Congo Impact was born.
